Aquatic Nuisance Species
The US Army Corps of Engineers in collaboration with our study partners have published the Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) White Paper: Non-Native Species of Concern and Dispersal Risk for the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study. The purpose of the ANS White Paper is to catalog potential non-native species within the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins and identify which ANS of concern will be an initial focus in GLMRIS.

Forty (40) aquatic nuisance species were originally identified in the ANS White Paper as ANS of Concern for GLMRIS Focus Area 1 (CAWS). As stated in a September 23, 2011 GLMRIS Announcement, the New Zealand Mudsnail is found in both basins and therefore, was removed from the list of ANS of Concern. While researching species in support of the detailed baseline risk assessment activities for GLMRIS, USACE removed five additional ANS of Concern - CAWS that are established in both the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins: alewife, European amphipod, cylindrical algae, tubificid worm, and spiny waterflea. Species removed from the list of ANS of Concern - CAWS will not be subject to further study in GLMRIS.
Explore the Focus Area 1 ANS of Concern in the tables below.
Compiling this list is the first step in establishing the current and future without project conditions for GLMRIS and will aid the study team in focusing efforts toward identifying potential ANS Controls for further evaluation. The Other Pathways Team (Focus Area 2) will be using the ANS White Paper to develop site-specific ANS of concern lists for all other potential aquatic pathways along the basin divide.
